CAVE: When I was fooled by CG

On last Tuesday, I have a chance to enter “CAVE” room in industrial engineering department (IE).

Amazingly, IE can build a room which cost 30 millions baht while our computer engineering department don’t even have our own multi-core processors PC for parallel computing lab.

But what is CAVE i’m talking about? OK, I’ll explain it to you with my great English skill.

CAVE is a cube with approximately 2.5 meters width. There’s a front, left, right, bottom plane for 4 projectors to project CG pictures on them. The back side is where you enter (no plane). And the top is where those projectors project pictures from.

When you enter the CAVE, you wear a special glasses which can automatically close one of your eyes, to fool your brain… and make pictures on those planes become 3D CG floating on the air!!

More over the glasses have sensor that can detect your head movement. If you move your head to left, those 3D stuffs will move for correct angle.

You also have an amazing joystick, which acts like wiimote, but in 3D !!. Imagine an amazing stick that can point and select menus in air, and control your movement in big 3D model like building, factory, or even a whole city.

With this magical joystick, not only you can move around with extremely speed on ground, but you can also fly !! And believe me, even the 3D is not completely smooth, it’s real exciting to fly over things like people in The Matrix. It has the real feeling which is very close to things in amusement park. (And can make you want to vomit too)

In conclusion, you should envy me for having a chance to enter that room. (Haha) It’s not something completely new, but it’s not easy to have a chance to test it for real !!

You can just ask Muak, his senior project is about CAVE and he has a key to the room.

I have ever tried it last year. Do you believe that I can’t even stand in that CAVE thing ToT. It’s so realistic.

Yes, I do. I have strange feeling in my stomach when I was there. And if I continued using it for an hour, I might vomit.
